Y'know I'm a wrestling fan too, I remember Stone Cold Steve Austin having a feud with Mr.McMahon
wait... so, you don't digitalize the tapes? I... I need a moment.
i love seeing behind the scenes stuff for stuff i like
this is so cool
Make sure to do this on the next episode too! Thank you!
Have been loving every episode of PPF and I enjoyed reading this! Re: Maki's dialog, that's a great feeling when something that is considered a weaker part of a project instead becomes a strong part. The delivery on those lines was perfect!
Perfect is a good word to describe the whole series! I feel myself watching each episode with a sense of wonder and a studious eye like when I was enraptured by video games as a kid, soaking in every detail.
If Spanky ever makes an NG account and would like the Spanky username, let me know!
Tom you're too kind! it makes my belly warm - with glee, no less!
As a fellow pro wrestling fan myself seeing the references were great
Fantastic read, thank you Speedo! I think i would love to hear more about your approach to animation specifically since you're so good at getting the maximum out of very few drawings. Or rather you have great taste in knowing when it's actually FUNNIER or more impactful to use less drawings than to fully animate something. When you talk about animatics, do those basically also include all the rough animation? Really good write-up thanks again!
thanks! yeah its something i could potentially delve into further on a future writeup, but certainly the works of Studio Trigger, Imaishi, etc.. remain the guiding light on using effectively limited animation, and when to go all out. learning when it's funnier to pull back and use very simple art/animation has just been something thats came naturally over the years of doing this style of comedy and animation, i suppose!
it's really been a matter of judging certain visual gags and thinking to myself "will this be any funnier if i add like 30 more frames of animation to this movement?", or could it in fact take away from the gag by being too busy looking.
for example Koro flying away at the beginning when he found out he had a child, would it have been any funnier I actually properly animated him flapping his cape and wings and flying off, or just silently tweening him away directly into an air balloon good enough? on the contrary, something like Mama powerbombing the wrestler through the entirety of the planet I feel is enhanced, both in its humor and the visual spectacle, by having it be fully animated
That was a interesting text to read.
I always like to know the string that pulls the thinks I likes, and I can said I really like PPF
Go Gogo!
Thanks for sharing that. Your sprites of fart biter were awesome. Continued success to you. I feel like if you went network you’d lose a lot of freedom so kudos on that.
i think i've discovered about myself that i'd have to care about a project a whole lot less if i wanted to put it to a network. Smiling Friends coming out like it has, i've discovered, is more of an anomaly than the norm, and comes at a significant cost to the guys behind it.
Very interesting! I love to see the behind the scenes

Great write-up hombré, thanks you for sharing.
You really capture that dry wit/deadpan humor from subtitled anime that dirty english speaking gaijin like myself really enjoy11
thanks Jeff!
Hell fucking yeah brother. Great writeup! Especially loved seeing the model sheets and design ping pong— as long as I’ve known you it seems like you just “do it” and it comes out awesome almost effortlessly, it’s very cool to peek behind the curtain a bit.
Thanks for the shoutout too, flattered 🙇♂️
